The S1088 was a prototype for the groundbreaking
Ericsson T28s. This rare unit in the Mobile Phone Museum collection is an FP1 -
First Factory Prototype, which featured a retractable antenna. This was abandoned in favour of the iconic “chimney style” antenna for the commercial product.
While the phone was being conceived, it was given the name S1088 to align with the naming architecture of the time, with S denoting that it was a dual-band GSM 900MHz / 1800MHz device.
However, by the time it launched, a new naming convention had been implemented, and it was assigned the model number T28s, with the "s" also indicating it was a dual-band 900/1800 product.
This design language was also the influence for future products, the
Ericsson T29s and the
Ericsson T39m.
