Features

The Ericsson A2628, a member of Ericsson’s A-class family of phones, was introduced at the TelecomAsia fair in Hong Kong. It was the successor to the A2618 and was part of Ericsson’s efforts to bring WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) “to all consumer segments”. It featured a WAP 1.1 browser offering rudimentary access to the Internet and was Ericsson’s seventh product that supported WAP. It started shipping during the first quarter 2001. It was positioned as “an affordable entry-level phone” and Ericsson stated that it confirmed “that mobile Internet is an everyday thing and WAP a feature for everyone”. The A2628 could be personalized with exchangeable snap-on covers and also through the software on the phone with users being about to create “start-up shows” where they could be greeted by a favourite song and a picture. The A2628 used both text and icons in its menu system and offered “help texts” if users needed extra guidance. It had a full graphic display capable of displaying four lines of text and included three games: Tetris, Erix and Maze. There were two versions of the device, the A2628s (included in the Mobile Phone Museum collection), and the A2628sc which featured a complete Chinese interface, allowing users to send and receive Chinese SMS messages and store Chinese names in the phone book.
