Features

The 232E was NEC's first mid-tier-priced GSM EDGE handset for the US market. It was part of the company’s High Definition Mobile (HDM) phone series, also referred to as the HDM+ series. The phone supported Java applications and multimedia messaging (MMS) and had an integrated VGA camera. It also had an integrated personal information manager (PIM) that supported contacts, calendar, tasks, email, and notes. This could be synchronised with PC applications using software from Extended Systems. It also supported rudimentary web browsing, using the OpenWave WAP browser. The phone also had an integrated antenna and used a Broadcom chip. At the time, NEC stated that the 232E targeted “users interested in enriched multimedia options, high-quality functionality and increased voice capabilities.” One differentiating feature of the device was support for voice activation, voice control and dialling by name or number. This was powered by Israel's ART Advanced Recognition Technologies using its smARTspeak NG technology.
