The Motorola 8800X was introduced in 1990 and was a cost-reduced and feature-improved version of Motorola’s 8000 series DynaTAC product range, which until the introduction of the
MicroTAC 9800X had been the premium product within Motorola mobile phone product line. Multiple versions were made for different network technologies including AMPS, ETACS, NMT and JTACS.
The early versions of the 8800X had a two-line red LED display and were lighter and approximately 20mm thinner than the
8500X. This was achieved by taking advantage of component technology improvements developed for the MicroTAC and advances in manufacturing techniques. Later versions of the 8800X (introduced in 1991) used a two-line LCD display.
