The Mickey Mouse-themed Dmobo M900 phone was unveiled to coincide with the opening of Disneyland Hong Kong in 2005. The phone had design elements linked to Mickey Mouse both in the hardware and software – notably the navigation buttons are aligned to look like the Mickey Mouse motif. The phone was manufactured by Korean-based NewGen Telecom Company and was a tri-band GSM device featuring a 1.3-megapixel camera and a 260K internal colour screen. The front face of the device had a leather inlay embossed with Mickey Mouse motifs which was described as “Mickey Magic Leather”. This was developed by Inclosia Solutions which offered a manufacturing process which enabled designer fabrics, leathers, real woods, and real metals to be combined with plastics in an injection moulding process. At the launch, Tony Pang, the Managing Director of Dmobo stated that the company wanted to deliver a phone that projected a “desire to provide fun, engaging and easy-to-use thematic mobile experiences” and stated that the decision to use the Mickey Mouse patterned leather enclosure was designed to “deliver a luxurious look & feel that will please Disney fans of all ages”. A limited edition of the Dmobo M900 was first launched in Hong Kong but the phone was subsequently available in numerous countries including Malaysia, Macau, Taiwan, Singapore, and Thailand. Each phone came with a charm strap in the shape of Mickey Mouse's famous white glove. Unfortunately, the unit in the Mobile Phone Museum collection does not have the charm strap but it is still a unique, relatively rare device we are proud to own.
