Features

The i85 was a Java-enabled mobile phone made by Motorola for US network Nextel. It used Sun Microsystem’s Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) which was an optimised version of Java designed specifically for mobile phones. It had a number of applications including a calendar, voice recorder, voice-activated dialling, enhanced phonebook and other capabilities such as customisable menus and adjustable font sizes. The phone also supported standard Nextel features including push-to-talk two-way radio communications. When the phone was launched, Nextel stated that the phone was designed for “white collar professionals and small to midsize business owners.” The company believed its support for Java meant that it was able to support downloadable applications which Nextel’s CEO claimed would “allow users to customize phones with applications tailored to their specific needs… offering customers with more choices to manage their business.” A range of applications were made available, ranging from free downloads to commercial offerings costing approximately $10. The retail price for the i85s when it launched was $299.99.
