Benefon launched the Delta (TDP-40) for use on NMT 450 first generation or 1G mobile networks in 1994. It was manufactured in Finland. The phone featured an address book capable of storing 99 entries and Benefon claimed the it had a stand-by time of up to four days. The Benefon Delta was sold in numerous markets including Estonia, Finland, Russia, Sweden, Ukraine and others. It was also one of the first phones to be available in Poland after the fall of communism. At 350 grams it was a hefty device to have in your pocket, but given how rare mobile phones were at the time it was also a significant status symbol for many users who liked to show it off and carry it around in their hands. The premium nature of mobile phones in those markets in the early 1990s is palpable, given that a few minutes on the phone could cost as much as an average monthly salary (which was about €20 in the early 1990s!).
